Transport

In order to transport alpacas you will need a licence from the State Veterinary Service or employ a licenced transporter. Each movement should be documented/certificated and documents carried with the alpaca/s as to place/s of loading and unloading with contact details.

Alpacas travel well and do not require any special equipment. A horsebox, livestock trailer or covered utility trailer is entirely adequate provided there is sufficient height for the alpaca to stand.

They normally lie down as soon as the vehicle moves and should not be tied to the trailer.
If there is no rubber matting on the floor of the trailer, straw or clean old carpet is suitable.

Adequate space should be provided at all times to ensure the proper safety of all the animals. If cria and mothers are transported, adequate stops should be made on long journeys (in excess of four hours) to allow suckling and offer fresh water and hay to the dam.

Pregnant females within two months of the expected date of birthing should not be transported.
Entire males and females should be separated by a solid partition. Gated partitions should be avoided.
